Caesars Palace — Las Vegas, Nevada, December 31, 1967

Originally Evel was going to jump the fountains at Caesars Palace on December 31, 1967, January 3, 1968 and then on January 6, 1968. The above photos are of the Caesars Palace fountains and Evel sitting on his Triumph 650 Bonneville for a promotional shot.

Left: Evel addressing over 20,000 fans who came to see him attempt this feat. Right: Evel performing wheelies before his jump to give them a thrilling show.
Evel making the run up to the ramp and taking off.
Evel started to get too vertical in the air and he came up short. He landed on the safety ramp which had a van to support it. This sent Knievel crashing like a rag doll all the way into the Dunes parking lot next door. As a result of the crash, Evel suffered a crush pelvis, a fractured hip and ribs. Also a skull concussion that kept him in a coma for 29 days. This jump and crash put Evel on the map and this was the beginning of Evel's rise to fame.
